Call for “system change not climate change” unites global movement
Corrupt Copenhagen ‘accord’ exposes gulf between peoples demands and elite interests

The highly anticipated UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen ended with a fraudulent agreement, engineered by the United States and dropped into the conference at the last moment. The "agreement" was not adopted. Instead, it was "noted" in an absurd parliamentary invention designed to accommodate the United States and permit Ban Ki-moon to utter the ridiculous pronouncement "We have a deal."

The Story of Cap and Trade
200x57_capandtrade_copy.pngThe Story of Cap & Trade http://storyofcapandtrade.org is a fast-paced, fact-filled, entertaining look at the leading climate solution being discussed at Copenhagen and on Capitol Hill. Host Annie Leonard introduces the people at the heart of this scheme - energy traders and Wall Street financiers. It then examines the "devils in the details" in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and, distractions from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you’ve heard about Cap & Trade, but aren’t sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the film is for you. It is based on the style of The Story of Stuff.

Southeast Asian Leaders - Go for Solution Not Delusion!
A Joint Statement, Copenhagen, Denmark, December 14, 2009

Copenhagen - 14 December 2009:   We, members of Oilwatch Southeast Asiai and Indonesian Civil Society Forum for Climate Justice (CSF) declare our common position and demands on the current climate negotiation in COP 15 UNFCCC Copenhagen. We have witnessed the lack of leadership among industrial countries to significantly cut carbon emission let alone show their responsibility to support developing countries to tackle the impacts of climate change.

NEW ECO-LOGICAL CALL

FOR THE EMANCIPATION OF TERRITORIES AND PEOPLES FROM FOSSIL ENERGY

The planet is experiencing a severe ecological crisis. The concentration of carbon dioxide-CO2 in the atmosphere is growing more than 3% per year, rather than decreasing by over half as it should. Meanwhile, the communities living in harmony with and caring for nature are being pressured to unbearable extremes.

For energy production, mainly for industry and transport, and for the excessive consumption of materials and manufactured goods made from crude oil, the atmosphere is being polluted, rivers damaged, forests destroyed, and so is destroyed the livelihood of communities in the South, affecting the health of individuals, communities and nature.

Throughout Throughout the entire planet, from country to country, we are experiencing water shortages, energy crises, crises over lack of rain, social crises, and violence with ever more force and frequency. Within this scenario, the transition to a post-oil civilization is inevitable. However However, actions from governments are dilated. Despite the expectations, the international summits on climate end up being a farce, for they end up imposing false solutions such as the carbon market and technologies that may further harm the environment.

Governments must be coherent and understand that they must move forward on mutually made agreements based on the principles of common and differentiated responsibilities to protect the planet, its climate, its biodiversity, and its people.

It is clear that the greatest efforts against climate change, and those made in terms of another model, are being made within communities and organizations, amongst groups of women and men around the world who are committed to life and nature. This knowledge and these efforts, locally, regionally or globally, gain more importance when they are collectively articulated.

Our communities continue to exist, despite the fact that capitalism imposes an individualistic model based on the theories of competition rather than solidarity. These communities express themselves in ways that should be practiced, strengthened and replicated.

Our organizations must strengthen and ratify their convictions with the certainty that change is possible, beyond the pragmatism that almost invariably leads to debilitating resignations.

Our countries must move to take the path of participation and social pressure in order to win new rights, such as returning to nature its status as a holder of rights, with defenders as key players in public policy, and with the ecological debt being recognized.
