STATEMENT ON PROTEST DEMONSTRATIOIN AGAINST
TRI-NATION GAS PIPELINE MEETING

Tri-nation technical committee meeting will be held on 14th February, 2005 in Yangon, the capital of Burma (aka Myanmar). This meeting will pave the way to sign the tri-nation gas pipeline project. The pipeline will be constructed to transit the gas from off-shore of Arakan, Burma ti India through Bangladesh.
According t the experience during construction the gas pipeline in eastern Burma, damage of ecology, using forced labour relocation and confiscation of land without compensation took place and the people of eastern Burma had to experience much suffering. So, it is certain that the people of Arakan will face the same fate of their eastern brothers.
We, The SHWE Gas Movement, therefore, would like to urge the people of Bangladesh to take part with us to protest against the construction of Tri-nation (India-Bangladesh-Burma)

AASYC members Bi-Handing with the members of Bangladesh Students' Union, Bangladesh Workers' organization, Bangladesh Agricultural Farm Labor Federation (BAFLF) and the individuals demonstrated against Tri-nation Gas Pipeline construction at 3.00pm on 19.1.05 ( Tuesday) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A procession contained about 40 participants was started in Dhaka University Campus towards National Press Club shouting the slogans against Burma military regime and its SHWE gas project. The participants in the procession also clamoured to set free Aung San Su Kyi and all of political prisoners being detained in the jails in Burma. The new phase of SPDC offensive the ethnic National parties. The participants in the procession were holding the black flags that is the emblems of condolence on the death of three person in an explosion taken place on 8.1.05 at Tengrattila gas well in North east Bangladesh. The meaning of black flag was also to stop SHWE gas project that is going to created thousand cases of forced labour, rape, relocation, prejudicial, persecution in Arakan (Rakahing state), in Yadana and Yetagon in Mon state as well.

The demonstration was watched in full attention by the police and authority concerned of Bangladesh.

The demonstration was ended at 5 pm in the same day.
